Introduction: Nursing care is usually classified into two general categories of behaviors: those that reflect technical skills or abilities and those that reflect attitudes, behaviors, or emotional aspects of care. Currently, there is an instrument called the Evaluation of Nursing Care Behaviors (ECCOE), which allows us to understand the care provided from the perspective of the nursing professional. Objective: To evaluate the nursing care behaviors of nursing staff in patients receiving care at a tertiary care institution. Method: This is a descriptive, prospective, and cross-sectional study. This study included a sample of 249 nursing professionals at a National Institute of Health in Mexico City with clinical duties. The Nursing Staff Care Behavior Assessment (ECCOE) instrument was used. Results: The ECCOE subscales (1 = not very important, 5 = very important) were rated globally as either “important” or “very important”. Humanism/faith-hope/sensitivity (72.56%) and support/protection/ environment (69.44%) were the most prominent. Expression of feelings showed a lower proportion in the “very important” category (46.88%). Item 16, treating the patient with respect, reached 95.98%.
Evaluating nursing staff care behavior is a fundamental element for ensuring quality care and promoting the humanization of health services.
